REUPHOLSTER YOUR FURNITURE?
We get asked over and over again if reupholstering furniture should be considered instead of purchasing new chairs and sofas. The answer is that you first have to ask
several questions as follows:
1 - Is the piece an heirloom (handed down from Grandma) does it have sentimental
value or is it very comfortable and you can't bear to part with it.
2- Does it have a good hardwood frame and (inners) springs and cushions.
3- Does it fit into your room very well.... (except for the fabric).
4. What is the maximum amount you want to spend for the piece(s).
HOW TO DETERMINE A BUDGET:
SOFA YDG. 12 - 14 YDS of fabric for a basic sofa 82"W x 36"D x 36"H plus 3 - 4 yds extra for fabric pattern repeat, armcovers and pillows. Approx. $25/.00 to $35.00 per yd low to average and $45.00 to $60.00 plus for couture.
LABOR: For standard size above Approx. $850.00 to $950.00 + plus extra for throw
pillows and armcovers.
CHAIR YDG. 8 - 10 YDS. of fabric for basic sitting chair 34"W x 28"D x 32" H plus
1 - 3 yds extra for pattern repeat, pillows & armcovers.
LABOR: $350.00 To $450.00 for a standard size chair above.
COMPLETELY REUPHOLSTER MEANS JUST THAT:

COMPLETELY REUPHOLSTER MEANS JUST THAT:
Make sure you use a responsible and reputable reupholstery shop. They should strip
down the piece(s) to the frame, remove all the existing fabric and build it from the
frame & springs up. Choose the foam gauge for your own comfort. Go over all the details with the upholsterer so there are no surprises after the piece is completed.
Choose an upholstery weight fabric that will withstand the test of time and make sure
you get enough of it the first time since matching fabric & dye lot to the original fabric after the purchase is almost impossible.
